TEACHER BIOGRAPHY
Jane Herr

Degrees/Certificates:
I received my Bachelors Degree from USI. I was in their first graduation class on the new campus. I attended U of E for my Masters Degree.
Biography:
I have been teaching at St. Wendel for 38 years. I taught second grade for three years. The rest of my teaching experience has been in grade three. I have been nominated three times for the Diocesan Teacher of the Year Award.
I am a life time member of St. Wendel Parish. I live with my husband, Ray, on Winery Road. We have three children, Chris married to Amy, Janelle married to Clint Weatherholt, and Amanda married to Mitch Happe. My pride and joy are my four grandsons, Evan, Will, Blaine, and Reid, and my granddaughter, Ella.
Fun Fact:
An interesting fact about myself is that when the present St. Wendel School was built I was in the third grade when we moved into the new school. Now many years later I am still in the same classroom. No wonder I call this my second home.

Working with Fractions
Curriculum
Goals: Third graders are my pride and joy. I feel honored to be part of their lives. Our goals this year include being responsible, being honest, and being organized.
Religion: In Religion class we will be working on the four marks of the Church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. The students will learn how to put their faith to work in their daily actions. Actions speak louder than words. On Mass days they will do journal writings to help them remember important messages. They also keep a gratitude journal.
Social Studies: Our community is the biggest decision during Social Studies. We find our place in this huge world. We work on geography skills. We talk about resources in our area and how we depend on others all over the world.
Math: Along with addition and subtraction the third graders will learn multiplication and division. They will have all of their multiplication facts memorized by the end of this year. Problem solving is a big part of this curriculum. I feel that even though they know the operations they need to be able to know when to use them. They also find that drawing a picture, acting it out, making a table, etc. are other ways to solve problems.
Language Arts: Our class focuses on the 4-Blocks. Phonics, Guiding Reading, Self-selecting Reading, and Writing. We also use WriteTraits in our writing lesssons.
Science: Students do experiments using the inquiry method and "hands on" learning experiences. Students experiment with many objects in their environment to learn more about the world around them.
Health: Students discuss body systems and how they work, taking care of their bodies, and how to keep them in top condition. We talk about hazards in our environment.
Computers: Keyboarding skills, publishing writings, using the internet, and the use of different software are part of our curriculum.
Spanish: We have a student from a local high school come to teach Spanish to our students. They are able to present a play in Spanish at the end of the school year.
